Charcoal Gray Suits
Charcoal is the dark end of gray, and it is the suit most men mean when they ask for a dark grey suit. It is correct almost everywhere: an interview, a funeral, a courtroom, an evening wedding, an ordinary Monday. Black does most of those too, but black looks severe in daylight and charcoal does not.
Solid Charcoal
Three solid charcoal suits. The Charcoal Gray Suit at $199 is the lightweight one. The Charcoal Gray Suit at $229 is the heavier, more structured cut. The Charcoal Medium Gray Suit at $199 sits between charcoal and medium gray and is the one to choose if the suit also has to work in a bright office.
Charcoal Plaid
The English Laundry Charcoal Navy Plaid is wool, $375, and the only patterned suit on this page. A plaid in charcoal and navy is quiet enough for work and still reads as a choice rather than a default.
Charcoal Tuxedo
For black tie, the Charcoal Gray Shawl Lapel Tuxedo at $229 is the alternative to black that does not try to be noticed, and under flash it photographs with more depth than black does.
Charcoal for Interviews and Work
Charcoal and navy are the two interview suits, and charcoal is the more formal of the pair. It is the right call for law, finance and any interview where the person across the table will be in a suit too. White or pale blue shirt, a dark tie, black shoes. If you want the softer option, navy suits are next door, and the business suits collection has both together.
Charcoal for Funerals
Charcoal is as appropriate as black at a funeral, and some men prefer it because it is a suit they will wear again afterward. The funeral suits page lists the solid black, charcoal and navy suits that are right for the day.
Charcoal at a Wedding
Charcoal is an evening wedding suit. In daylight, and especially outdoors at noon, it absorbs light and can photograph as a block of shadow, so for a daytime wedding the lighter grays are the better pick. After sunset charcoal looks the part, and a groom in charcoal with groomsmen in medium gray is a combination that shows up well in photographs. The wedding suits page has the rest.
What Comes in the Box
Each suit here is a complete outfit: jacket, pants, shirt, tie and socks. The solid charcoal suits run from $199 to $229. Shipping is free on U.S. orders over $99 and exchanges are free.
Charcoal Jacket and Trousers on Their Own
The Charcoal Gray Suit Jacket is $149.99 and the matching Charcoal Gray Suit Pants are $79.99. Charcoal trousers also pair with a navy blazer, which is the oldest combination in menswear and still one of the best.
Getting the Size Right
Our suit size estimator takes height, weight and build and returns a jacket and pant size in about a minute. If it misses, the exchange is free.
