Brown Suits, and Why Most Men Skip Them
Brown is the least formal suit color, and that is the whole point of it. It is not a funeral suit and it does not belong at black tie. What it does, better than navy or charcoal, is look like clothing rather than a uniform. A brown suit at an autumn wedding, a country venue or a weekend lunch reads as a decision somebody made.
It is also the color that rewards fabric. Brown in a flat worsted looks like a rental counter. Brown in tweed, flannel or a soft check looks like something kept for years, which is why the three here are textured rather than plain.
Camel
Camel is the pale end of brown and the easiest to wear, because it behaves more like a neutral than a color. The Light Brown Camel Suit is a daytime autumn suit and the one to start with if you have never owned brown.
Chocolate and Tweed
The Chocolate Brown Suit is the deep end, dark enough for an evening ceremony in a way camel is not. The Tweed Three Piece is the cold weather version with the vest included, and tweed is where brown makes the most sense: the texture breaks up the color so it never reads flat.
The Brown Double Breasted is the sharpest cut of the four. A double breasted front in brown is an unusual combination and it photographs well for exactly that reason.
What to Wear With Brown
Brown shoes, in a shade away from the suit rather than matching it: tan shoes with a chocolate suit, dark brown with camel. Never black shoes with brown, which is the rule most worth keeping in this color. Cream, white and pale blue shirts all work. Green and burgundy ties sit naturally against brown, which is why it suits an autumn wedding palette so well.
The Chocolate Brown Vest is listed above and is worth knowing about on its own: a brown vest over a white shirt is a common groomsmen look at outdoor autumn weddings, with no jacket at all. See groomsmen suits for how group ordering works.
What Comes in the Box
Each full suit here is a complete bundle: jacket, pants, shirt, tie and socks. Brown suits run from $249 to $279, with the tweed three piece at $349. Shipping is free over $99 and exchanges are free.
Getting the Size Right
Textured fabrics like tweed sit differently from smooth worsted and feel tighter at the same measurement, so do not size down in them. Our suit size estimator takes height, weight and build and returns a jacket and pant size in about a minute.
