How to Measure for a Suit at Home

A good suit needs a good fit — and you don't need a tailor to get it right. Grab a measuring tape and follow these 7 simple steps. It takes five minutes, no guesswork.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these simple tools.

Soft Measuring Tape

A flexible tailor's tape — avoid rigid rulers or metal tapes.

Full-Length Mirror

Helps you keep the tape level and positioned correctly.

Light Clothing

Wear a thin shirt or no shirt for the most accurate results.

A Friend (Optional)

Helpful for shoulders and inseam, but you can do it solo.

7 Easy Steps to Measure Yourself

Follow each step carefully. Take your time and write down every measurement.

1

Chest

Wrap the tape around the widest part of your chest, just under your armpits. Keep the tape flat and level across your back. Arms down at your sides, breathe normally — don't puff out or suck in. Write down the number.

Tip: The tape should be snug but not tight. You should be able to slide one finger underneath.

2

Shoulders

Stand straight with relaxed shoulders. Place the tape at the edge of one shoulder bone, stretch it across your back to the other shoulder. Keep the tape flat and straight — don't let it dip down your back.

Tip: This is the hardest to do alone. Ask a friend or use a mirror for accuracy.

3

Waist

Find your natural waist — just above the belly button. Wrap the tape around snugly, not tight. Stand straight and don't suck in. Write down the number.

Tip: With our size calculator, you only need your jean size — no need to measure your waist separately.

4

Sleeve Length

Place the tape at the edge of your shoulder bone and measure down to your wrist bone with your arm relaxed at your side. Measure both arms and use the longer measurement.

Tip: Don't bend your elbow. A slight natural bend is fine, but keep your arm mostly straight.

5

Inseam

Stand straight with legs slightly apart. Place the tape at the top of your inner thigh, right where it meets your body. Measure straight down to your ankle bone. Keep the tape straight.

Tip: Alternatively, measure a pair of pants that fits you well — from crotch seam to hem.

6

Neck

Wrap the tape around the base of your neck, where a shirt collar would sit. Leave enough room to slide two fingers between the tape and your neck for comfort. Keep the tape flat, not tilted.

Tip: Don't pull too tight — your dress shirt collar needs breathing room.

Height & Weight

Stand straight against a wall without shoes. Use a book or ruler flat on your head to mark the top. Measure from the floor to the mark. Use a scale for your weight. These numbers help fine-tune your overall fit and jacket length.

Tip: Measure in the morning for the most consistent results.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even small errors can throw off your suit fit. Watch out for these.

Pulling Too Tight

The tape should be snug, never squeezing. You need room to breathe and move comfortably.

Measuring Over Thick Clothes

Sweaters and jackets add inches. Measure over a thin t-shirt or directly on skin.

Tilted or Twisted Tape

Keep the tape flat and level all the way around. A tilted tape gives inaccurate readings.

Guessing Instead of Measuring

Don't round up or down. Write the exact number. Double-check each measurement.

Ready? Use Our AI Size Calculator

You've got your numbers — now turn them into a perfect fit. Our AI-powered size calculator uses your height, weight, and body type to recommend the exact suit size. No measuring tape required — just enter your jean size for waist.

Why Accurate Measurements Matter for Your Suit

A suit is only as good as its fit. Even the highest-quality fabric and finest tailoring can't save a suit that's the wrong size. That's why knowing how to measure yourself properly is the most important step in buying a suit online.

When you take accurate body measurements at home, you eliminate the guesswork that leads to ill-fitting suits. A chest measurement that's off by just one inch can mean the difference between a sharp, modern fit and a boxy, uncomfortable jacket. Similarly, incorrect sleeve or inseam lengths can make even an expensive suit look like it belongs to someone else.

The Suit Century Advantage

At Suit Century, we've combined professional measurement guidance with our AI-powered size calculator to make online suit shopping as accurate as visiting a tailor. Our calculator analyzes your height, weight, body type, and proportions to recommend the perfect jacket size, pant waist, sleeve length, and jacket length — all from measurements you can take at home in five minutes.

And if your first suit doesn't fit perfectly? Our home try-on program lets you exchange for a different size at no additional cost. Free shipping, free exchanges — we'll work with you until the fit is exactly right.

Measurements for Every Occasion

Whether you're buying a wedding suit, a business suit, a prom tuxedo, or formal event attire, the measurement process is the same. Take five minutes with this guide, enter your numbers into our size calculator, and order with confidence knowing your suit will fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about measuring yourself for a suit.

Measurement Basics

Yes, you can measure yourself using a full-length mirror. A friend makes it easier for shoulders and inseam, but it's not required. Take your time and double-check each number.
Use a soft, flexible measuring tape made for sewing or tailoring. Avoid rigid rulers, metal construction tapes, or string. Every Suit Century order ships with a complimentary measuring tape inside the box.
Our size calculator accepts inches. If you measure in centimeters, you can use our cm to inch converter to convert your numbers before entering them.
Snug but not tight. You should be able to slide one finger between the tape and your body for most measurements. For the neck, allow room for two fingers since your collar needs breathing space.

Fit & Accuracy

No. Wear light clothing — a thin t-shirt at most — or measure directly on the body. Thick sweaters or jackets add extra inches and will throw off your measurements.
If your weight or body shape changes significantly, remeasure before ordering. Otherwise, your measurements stay valid for years. We recommend double-checking before important events like weddings.
If you fall between two sizes, our size calculator takes all your measurements into account to recommend the best fit. In general, size up for a more relaxed fit or size down for a slimmer look. Our home try-on guarantee means you can always exchange if needed.
No. Our AI calculator only requires your height, weight, and jean size as a minimum. Additional measurements like neck, sleeve, and inseam help fine-tune the recommendation but are optional.
